The Lights by Paul Engle

The Lights by Paul Engle

As once in that
Old desert sky
Was hung the star
Men traveled by,

So on cold earth
In this year, we
Hang the warm lights
On our tall tree.

Now in the month
Of long, dark nights,
We put out strings
Of long, gay lights,

That men may know
Hope still can glow
On earth below
Through night and snow.

Constant Change by Scott Harker

Constant Change,
a song by Scott Harker

I’d like to know
What’s going on in your mind,
Find the time,
To say what’s percolating.

I’d like to see
What’s flowing in your heart.
Won’t your start
Communicating?

Then we will say
That it’s okay –
And share an orange.

Our eyes will meet,
How sweet,
In understanding.

The wind will blow
The sun will shine,
We’ll enter a
Whirlpool in time,

And know the power of the weather:

Constant Cha-a-a-a-ange,
Constant Cha-a-a-a-ange,
Constant change,
Constant Change,
Constant Cha-a-ange!

All about real Hip Hop - Street Poetry and Music

One of the greatest forms of entertainment is music. For music is a unique way to touch the heart of a human being. Music is attached to our lives in many ways.

Not every type of music is preferred by all humans. For different segments of people, we can find various kinds of music. Hip Hop is one of the popular forms of music today for a large segment of listeners. Music lovers all around the world rate hip hop music very highly. It is not the oldest form of music, but people like it anyway.

The unique style and images of hip hop music, make it popular, not only in USA, but all around the world. The introduction of hip hop music was not so long ago. While introduced in the sixties, it was in the early seventies when this music began to be noticed. Many people believe hip hop was a combination of West African and African American music.

In the early period, in the Bronx, hip hop music was mainly played at block parties. But as it became extremely popular in these parties, people started to think about performing hip hop music in other places. By the mid 1980’s, musicians were playing hip hop music in discos.

In the beginning, hip hop music was mostly a verbal track of street poetry with a remix of popular songs in the background. But original music tracks soon followed to accompany the verbal track, and a huge craze was created among music lovers.

Today hip hop is a very popular form of music. Millions of copies of hip hop music are sold every year. In spite, of all the controversies created by hip-hop artists, they are still growing in number. It is one venue where poetry is alive and commercially viable!

Mutability by Percy Shelley

Mutability by Percy Bysshe Shelley

We are the clouds that veil the midnight moon;
      How restlessly they speed, and gleam, and quiver,
Streaking the darkness radiantly!–yet soon
      Night closes round, and they are lost for ever:

Or like forgotten lyres, whose dissonant strings
      Give various response to each varying blast,
To whose frail frame no second motion brings
      One mood or modulation like the last.

We rest.–A dream has power to poison sleep;
      We rise.–One wandering thought pollutes the day;
We feel, conceive or reason, laugh or weep;
      Embrace fond foe, or cast our cares away;

It is the same!–For, be it joy or sorrow,
      The path of its departure still is free:
Man’s yesterday may ne’er be like his morrow,
      Nought may endure but Mutability.

The Christmas Robin By Robert Graves

The Christmas Robin By Robert Graves

The snows of February had buried Christmas
Deep in the woods, where grew self-seeded
The fir-trees of a Christmas yet unknown.
Without a candle or a strand of tinsel.

Nevertheless when, hand in hand, plodding
Between frozen ruts, we lovers paused
And “Christmas trees!” cried suddenly together,
Christmas was there again, as in December.

We velveted our love with fantasy
Down a long vista-row of Christmas trees,
Whose coloured candles slowly guttered down
As grandchildren came trooping round our knees.

But he knew better, did the Christmas Robin –
The murderous robin with his breast aglow
And legs apart, in spade-handle perched:
He prophesied more snow, and worse than snow.

The Maid Servant At The Inn by Dorothy Parker

The Maid Servant At The Inn by Dorothy Parker

“it’s queer,” she said; ” I see the light
   As plain as I beheld it then,
All silver-like and calm and bright–
   We’ve not had stars like that again!

“And she was such a gentle thing
   To birth a baby in the cold.
The barn was dark and frightening–
   This new one’s better than the old.

“I mind my eyes were full of tears,
   For I was young, and quick distressed,
But she was less than me in years
   That held a son against her breast.

“I never saw a sweeter child–
   The little one, the darling one!–
I mind I told her, when he smiled
   You’d know he was his mother’s son.

“It’s queer that I should see them so–
   The time they came to Bethlehem
Was more than thirty years ago;
   I’ve prayed that all is well with them.”
