How To Sing When You’re Nervous
Performance anxiety is a big problem among performers of all kinds and at all levels of experience. To overcome performance anxiety you have to acknowledge where it comes from and find ways to turn your nerves and adrenaline into positive forces. It’s important to identify the source of fear, in order to deal with it successfully.
Some common fears you may deal with as a performer are: your voice cracking during a performance, not being able to reach certain notes, feeling or looking stupid in front of friends, forgetting the lyrics of a song, wondering if you will fail or succeed, or even rejection – just to name a few. Naming the fear enables you to go after the problem and beat it. When you understand the problem, take the time to deal with the source of your fear as opposed to just the symptoms.
You will notice that with adrenaline comes a racing heart. You can duplicate that feeling by running in place until you’re out of breath and then sing your song. During your practice session it’s a good idea to sometimes sing while out of breath so you can practice dealing with the stress situation and the feeling of being out of breath. When you endure breathlessness it’s similar to the issues that occur during your anxiety attack in the middle of a performance. Just take a breath and you will feel it fall into your body. When this happens just realize you can sing even when the heart is pounding relentlessly. It may not be the easiest thing to do, but it is possible.
It might help to know that you’re not alone and that thousands of singers deal with anxiety before performing as well. Everyone experiences anxiety differently but there are several common symptoms that can surface such as; shaky hands, nausea, butterflies in the stomach, sweaty armpits, the urge to cry, nausea. an almost an endless list.
Most singers assume they should be calm and collective before a performance, but for most people it’s just not the case and believing they should be only increases the anxiety. You should expect to be nervous and jittery because this will allow you to sing through the nerves. In fact, you can use the fight-or-flight excitement of adrenaline coursing through your body to enhance your performance. By reframing your thoughts about your performance, you can change from fight-or-flight adrenaline to a rush of excitement to seize an opportunity.
