A Red, Red Rose by Robert Burns

A Red, Red Rose by Robert Burns

O my Luve’s like a red, red rose,
    That’s newly sprung in June;
O my Luve’s like the melodie
    That’s sweetly play’d in tune.–

As fair art thou, my bonie lass,
    So deep in luve am I;
And I will love thee still, my Dear,
Till A’ the seas gang dry.–

Till a’ the seas gang dry, my Dear,
And the rocks melt wi’ the sun:
I will love thee still, my Dear,
While the sand o’ life shall run.–

And fare the weel, my only Luve!
And fare thee weel, a while!
And I will come again, my Luve,
Tho’ it were ten thousand mile!

Sent North on a Rainy Night by Lǐ Shāngyǐn

Sent North on a Rainy Night by Lǐ Shāngyǐn (812-858)

You ask when I will return.
The time is not known.
Night rain overspills the autumn pools
    in Ba Shan Mountain.
When shall we trim a candle at the western window
And speak of this night’s mountain rain?
        - Translation found in Womb of Every World by Walter Jon Williams

Willow by Lǐ Shāngyǐn

Boundless the leaves roused by spring,
Countless the twigs which tremble in the dawn.
Whether the willow can love or not,
Never a time when it does not dance.
Blown fluff hides white butterflies,
Drooping bands disclose the yellow oriole.
The beauty which shakes a kingdom must reach through all the body:
Who comes only to view the willow’s eyebrows?

The Lights by Paul Engle

The Lights by Paul Engle

As once in that
Old desert sky
Was hung the star
Men traveled by,

So on cold earth
In this year, we
Hang the warm lights
On our tall tree.

Now in the month
Of long, dark nights,
We put out strings
Of long, gay lights,

That men may know
Hope still can glow
On earth below
Through night and snow.
